FAQs

How Can I Best Care for My Teaware?

Due to the various types and styles of teaware, the answer to this question is quite broad. Despite this, here are some general rules of thumb that will prove useful

  1. Only use teaware for its intended purpose, unless stated otherwise (ie. only using a chawan for making matcha)

  2. Wash gently, using water to rinse after every use and using soap on occasion when a deep clean is necessary

  3. Let the wares properly dry after washing before storing to prevent bacteria growth

How are Your Products Sourced?

We work directly with kilns and artisans in Japan to make hand-made teaware accessible to all those who seek it in the United States. The makers we work with are ones that we have encountered naturally as tea-lovers, and who’s work we felt should be shared with more people. In other words, there isn’t a single bowl on our site that we wouldn’t welcome into our personal collections (assuming we don’t already have one)!

Why Hand-Made?

This is an excellent question, and one that I had for a long time before using such teaware for myself. While other teawares of different origins, most commonly mass produced ones, will do the job, hand-made teaware elevates the experience in a way that is almost difficult to describe. This is a difference that you can both see and feel during your tea time, as each piece has unique features that set it apart from those of its kind- the slight variations in its finger lines and patterns making each one truly unique.

Going further back to the principals of chado, or the way of tea, tea is about taking a step back from the day to be present in the current moment to appreciate all that it has to offer, be that the delicious tea, the calm atmosphere, or the beautiful wares you are able to enjoy using. While there are many beautiful pieces of teaware that you could enjoy, this one is yours.

What Does Kosei Mean?

When translated to English from Japanese, the word Kosei (個性) is most similar to terms like “uniqueness” and “individuality.” It is for this very meaning that we chose the name Kosei Tea Ware, as it is our sole objective to make tea ware with these traits accessible to all.

By maintaining direct partnerships with artisans and kilns from all over Japan, each with centuries and generations of experience in traditional methods, we strive to integrate the lengthy history, rich culture, and beautiful aesthetics that these makers are known for into pieces that are individual among the rest, remaining true to the Kosei name.
